Recently, a family in Leduc County discovered what is believed to be a femur from a Tyrannosaurus Rex while on an acreage hike.
The news of this discovery has excited the local community and left many wondering what other secrets the property may hold.
Although it is still too early to know for certain, if the bone is indeed from a Tyrannosaurus Rex, it would be an incredible find!
This discovery is a reminder of the fascinating history that lies beneath our feet, and reminds us that we never know what we might find when exploring the great outdoors.

Brenda Sedlak and her friends were out on a hike when they came across a large bone sticking out of a rock. At first, they didn’t believe it was real, but after sending photos to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, it was determined that the bone was likely from a Tyrannosaurus Rex.
“The more we looked around the rocks, the more exciting it was… maybe we have a whole slew of things here and we don’t know.”
“It’s super exciting in general, but for it to be such a large dinosaur-like the tyrannosaurus, that just takes it a little bit higher on the excitement level,” said Sedlak.
Researchers believe it to be a femur bone because of how thick it is around the marrow and are planning to come and examine the bone in person, added Sedlak.
Because of this discovery, Sedlak is keeping an eye out for more bones whenever she goes on hikes. It’s not impossible she could find more, as our region is prime for prehistoric surprises, according to a paleontologist.
“We do have a lot of those rock exposures in various creek beds, river valleys. If you are walking around your property and you own a substantial amount of property near a river or creek there’s a good chance you will be able to find something similar, some fossils weathering out of the hill,” said Mark Powers with the University of Alberta.
“Some of the best finds do come from people with private land or just individuals taking a hike and reporting it and that’s because there’s just more feet on the ground and people might reach areas that might not be a targeted research spot.”
It’s important if people find bones embedded in rocks or the ground that the contact experts to come and excavate them, added Powers. This helps preserve the bones and prevent them from being broken during the extraction process.

Powers noted it’s important for people to contact experts if they find bones embedded in rocks or the ground. He explained that this helps preserve the bones and prevent them from being broken during the extraction process. “This is a very delicate operation,” said Powers. “You don’t want to just go in there and start yanking on things.” He added that, in addition to contacting experts, it’s also important to take pictures of the bones in their natural setting and make note of their location. This information can be used to help piece together the story of what happened and how the bones ended up where they were found. By taking these steps, we can help ensure that these ancient remains are properly preserved and protected.
